GED Books & Audiobooks We Recommend

Practice on score145 finds your weak topics. A good book teaches them. These are the current editions we point students to, and why.

Disclosure: score145 is operated by Nail it Prep, and as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases made through the links on this page. It costs you nothing extra. No publisher paid to be listed.

How we chose

  • Current edition only. The GED was redesigned in 2014; anything older covers a test that no longer exists.
  • Books that appear on Amazon's GED best-seller list and have held up in classrooms.
  • Fit with how most people actually pass: one main book, plus daily online practice.

What to skip

  • Used books with no edition year, or priced under a few dollars — almost always pre-2014.
  • Free PDF "study guides" from random sites. Often pirated and out of date.
  • A single-subject book as your only book, unless you are already strong in the other three.

Free first

Before you buy anything: your public library almost certainly has the Kaplan or Princeton Review book. score145's study guides and flashcards are free, and the PDF study guides cost nothing. The official practice test, GED Ready from GED Testing Service, is the only one that predicts your real score and is worth taking once you're consistently over 145 here.

Start here: one book for all four subjects

Pick one of these three. You don't need all of them — the differences are tone and depth, not content.

Our first pick

GED Test Prep Plus 2026 (10th Edition)

by Kaplan Test Prep · Paperback · Kindle

The one book most people should buy. A diagnostic pretest tells you where you stand, then two full-length practice tests, about a thousand practice questions, and short online video lessons for the hard parts. Pairs naturally with score145: read the lesson here, drill the topic there.

Best if: You want one book, a plan, and plenty of practice.

GED Test Premium Prep, 32nd Edition

by The Princeton Review · Paperback · Kindle

Heavier on test strategy than Kaplan: how to pace, when to guess, how to read a GED question for the trap. Lots of drills. Some students find it dense; if you want short lessons, Kaplan or Dummies reads easier.

Best if: You already know the content and want strategy and volume.

GED Test Prep 2025/2026 For Dummies

by Tim Collins · Wiley · Paperback · Kindle · online practice tests

The friendliest starting point. Plain language, no assumption that you remember school. It does not go as deep on math or the essay as the other two, so plan to lean on score145's walkthroughs for those.

Best if: It's been years since school and you want a gentle re-entry.

Extra help for math

Math is the subject most students fail. If your practice score here is under 145, add one of these.

If math is the problem

Mathematical Reasoning Workbook for the GED Test, 4th Edition

by McGraw Hill · Paperback

Math is the subject most people fail, and the all-in-one books move through it fast. This workbook slows down: step-by-step worked examples, then practice on the same skill. Math only — it does nothing for the other three subjects.

Best if: Your math practice score here is under 145.

Texas Instruments TI-30XS MultiView

by Texas Instruments · Scientific calculator

This is the calculator the GED gives you on screen during the math test. Owning the real one means the buttons are already in your fingers on test day: fractions, exponents, the toggle key. Not a book, but the most-asked-about purchase in GED classes.

Best if: You want zero surprises with the on-screen calculator.

More practice questions

For the last stretch, after you know the material.

GED Test: 1,001 Practice Questions For Dummies

by Stuart Donnelly · Wiley · Paperback · Kindle · online question bank

Pure drilling, every question explained. It teaches nothing new, so it is a second book, not a first one. Good for the last few weeks when you know the material and need reps.

Best if: You've finished a main book and want more questions.

In Spanish

The GED is offered in Spanish. Score145's Spanish side is at score145.com/es/.

For the Spanish-language GED

Preparación para el Examen de GED, Tercera Edición

by McGraw Hill · Paperback · Kindle · in Spanish

The one full-subject GED book written in Spanish by a major publisher. Covers all four subjects for the Spanish-language version of the test. If you will test in English, use it alongside an English book, not instead of one.

Best if: You're taking the GED in Spanish.

Audiobooks: study while you drive or work

Audio is great for review and bad for math. Use it to keep concepts fresh, then come back here and answer questions.

Most-reviewed GED audiobook

GED Audio Study Guide! Complete A-Z Review Edition

by Jeff Morrow · Audible · Audiobook

A spoken review of all four subjects. Audio works for science and social studies concepts, vocabulary, and grammar rules; it works poorly for math, which you have to see. Listen on the commute, then do the questions here.

Best if: You drive or work with your hands and have hours to listen.

GED AudioLearn — Complete Audio Review for the GED

by AudioLearn · Audible · Audiobook

Written by educators for listening rather than read aloud from a textbook, so it moves at a speaking pace. A solid alternative if the Morrow guide's narrator doesn't suit you.

Best if: You want a second voice for review.

GED Study Guide: 240 Practice Questions with Detailed Explanations

by Adam West · Achieva Test Preparation · Audiobook

Practice questions read aloud with the reasoning behind each answer. Useful for hearing how a GED question is worded and where the wrong answers come from.

Best if: You learn by hearing the explanation.

by Amazon · Free trial · cancel any time

Most GED audiobooks above are included with, or cheaper through, an Audible membership. Start the trial, pick one guide, and cancel if you don't need a second.
